Auburn Bay Before and After

When we first were approached to help landscape this home in the south-east Calgary community of Auburn Bay there was already a complete landscape in place but it did not suit the needs of the new owners. They wanted to have a new deck with built in spa, an outdoor kitchen, lots of space to play and entertain and generally make the property more useable.

Bonavista Feature 1

These homeowners in the south-east Calgary community of Lake Bonavista have retained our services several times on this property, the most recent of which involved renovating the landscape to suit extensive renovations made to the home. Maximizing the use of the lake frontage and the south facing backyard for entertaining were the primary objectives. This property features extensive retaining walls in Pisa2 block, a sand beach, putting green, and large patios for seating and an outdoor kitchen.

Bonavista Feature 2

Located in the mature south-east Calgary neighborhood of Lake Bonavista, this property was due for a facelift. Rotting wood decks, overgrown shrubs and other tired landscaping gave way for a gas fireplace seating area adjacent to a putting green, water feature, and larger dining patio. In a private corner of the property we located the spa. Some existing trees were retained including a healthy cut-leaf weeping birch.

Calgary Horticulture Society in 2002

This Calgary garden was a winner with the Calgary Horticulture Society in 2002; the last year they had a category for professionals. A total renovation of this backyard resulted in a beautiful garden with several sitting areas paved with cobblestone pavers. The retaining walls and water feature are constructed of dry-pack Wiarton limestone. The spruce 'builder deck' was replaced with a new vinyl covered deck and an aluminum and glass hand rail. A fire-pit, natural gas heaters, and garden lighting extend the use of this garden into the cooler evening hours.

Chaparral Feature

The objective for this garden on Lake Chaparral in south-east Calgary is for curb appeal in the front and to maximize the function of the backyard for entertaining, privacy, and family time. The backyard features a fire-pit close to the lake for four seasons of use plus a spa with built in deck surround, and a generous lawn area framed by borders of hardy plants for privacy and year round interest.

Cranston Before and After

Located in the south-east Calgary community of Cranston, this semi-detached home was already landscaped but it had much more potential. Low maintenance was a priority as well as expanding the patio spaces for entertaining and relaxing.

Elbow Park Feature

Located in the south-west Calgary community of Elbow Park, this wonderfully maintained home required an outdoor space for entertaining to replace the outgrown play area as the family grew. This property now features a gas fireplace, generous patio, and complimentary landscaping with an eye toward privacy and low maintenance.

Fences, Pillars & Rails

For enclosing your property, a dog run, ornamental feature, or deck rail we have a wide variety of options. We build classic wood or chain link fences and we also use products like ornamental metal fencing, vinyl fencing, right up to custom masonry pillars and wrought iron. On decks we can build a rail from wood or welded aluminum rails in a variety of styles from picket to glass. Each application has it’s own pros and cons, allow us to help you with that decision.

Fireplaces & Firepits

Calgary evenings are generally cool so the addition of a fireplace or firepit can go a long ways to extending the use of your garden. Both can be wood or gas fired and can be built of a wide range of materials from precast concrete or natural stone. Fireplaces have additional benefits of providing privacy or wind protection and become a focal point in the garden. They can be designed with built in seating, pergolas, wood boxes and incorporated into other landscape features like retaining walls. It would be our pleasure to help you create your outdoor fireplace or firepit and it is one area where we are regularly utilizing 3D design software.

Heritage Pointe Feature 1

When called upon to landscape this Heritage Pointe property it was obvious there was a great deal of potential. An outdoor fireplace area and a large water feature with a stream were desired along with a complete renovation of the planting spaces for the avid gardener in the family.

Heritage Pointe Feature 2

The main criterion for this Heritage Pointe property was to incorporate a pool into the existing landscape. We had the benefit of an established pergola and a fire-pit in the corner of the property but otherwise it was a clean slate. The pool obviously becomes the focal point of the garden and stamped concrete was selected for the patio and pool deck spaces.

Heritage Pointe Feature 3

This large lot in Heritage Pointe backs onto a naturally treed ravine and incorporates lots of play spaces for a growing family plus lots of areas to entertain or relax with the spa. Low maintenance was a priority for this busy family.

Low Maintenance & Curbs

The amount of maintenance you are willing to do, or pay to have done, is a factor that should be considered at the landscape design stage. Low maintenance doesn’t need to be stark or boring – there are many options in materials and plants that can combine to create a low maintenance garden. Appropriate hardy plant choices, use of mulch, durable building materials that don’t require painting or staining, use of edging, even the type of turf grass species used all contribute. Poured in place concrete curbs is a service we offer that fits in this category and looks great too.

Lynx Ridge Feature

This estate home in the NW Calgary community of Lynx Ridge was bare clay when we arrived to help envision the landscape. A swimming pool was desired along with a pool shed that could incorporate an outdoor kitchen and fireplace. Privacy was needed in some parts of the garden while in other parts taking advantage of the mountain view was a priority.

Mount Royal Feature

This unique home on edge of downtown Calgary is a longer term project we had the privilege to design and implement. We were involved early in the extensive renovation process to provide input on design elements and help resolve logistical issues on the site. Among the many elements in the garden a large water feature was desired, in part to help mask traffic noise, as well as numerous areas to entertain, relax, and explore.

Mountain Park Feature

This modest sized backyard in the SE community of Mountain Park had the typical amenities often found in these areas, namely a lawn and a deck. The deck needed maintenance and the potential for much more was obvious. Entertaining areas, a fireplace and outdoor kitchen topped the wish list.

Outdoor Kitchens

An outdoor kitchen is a perfect complement to your outdoor entertainment space. In addition to the traditional gas grill, outdoor kitchens can include bar seating, refrigerators, dishwashers, sinks, storage, pizza ovens, smokers, and roof structures. They can be poolside or tucked into a more intimate setting along with a dining or lounging area. Stainless steel modules are available right up to fully custom units with solid surface counters and cultured stone or natural stone detailing.

Patios and Walks

Our most commonly used materials are concrete (broom, exposed, or stamped finish), and pavers. Stamped concrete finishes give an almost infinite range of color and finish choices. Pavers have a wide range of shapes, patterns, colors and finishes and are very well suited to installation in the Calgary landscape. With proper base compaction and the use of polymeric sand to fill the joints, pavers are well suited to the Calgary climate, look great, and are long lasting. Our landscape designers can help you narrow the range of choices suitable for your project.

Plants & Edibles

Calgary is a generally harsh climate to garden in but there are many plants that thrive here. We have many years of experience combining the best plants for seasonal color and texture, hardiness, and special traits like fruit production, bloom, fall color, deer resistance etc. We frequently build vegetable and herb gardens for clients. Often they are done in a raised timber or precast concrete block planter because that maximizes the productivity in a small footprint and the improved drainage and soil warming gives a superior growing environment. Even a small vegetable or herb garden can bring you a lot of pleasure and nothing beats fresh produce from your own garden.

Play Courts and Structures

Kids of all ages will appreciate what we can provide for your backyard. We can help incorporate a trampoline or traditional climbing and swinging structure into an appropriate place and with an appropriate surface beneath like pea gravel or rubber tiles. Playing courts utilizing Sport Court tiles and accessories provide a durable, safe, and flexible product well suited to our climate. You can use all year and even flood in the winter for skating and hockey. We can also incorporate a checker/chess board into a patio, a swing into a pergola and other creative options to get the maximum use out of your outdoor spaces.
